Language learning is at the heart of our curriculum. Out of 365 days, children spend approximately 220 days engaging in language classes, where they listen, speak, read, and write. In a typical 45-minute session, around 30 minutes are dedicated solely to speaking. Additionally, separate LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) sessions are conducted in the library twice a week for each language, further strengthening communication skills.
We also encourage expression through creative activities. For example, after school reopened this year, children shared vacation diaries — describing experiences such as learning new recipes, visiting family villages, or exploring different cultures abroad. They participate in extempore competitions, programmes like Word Weavers to craft sentences creatively, and Literary Week, which focuses on dramatics, essay writing, extempore, and reading. Furthermore, through Chronicles, children become authors, poets, columnists, editors, and journalists — creating original works and expressing themselves in multiple ways.
Traditional homework often involves children copying answers from textbooks, which requires minimal thinking — essentially a mechanical task. At Slate, we avoid such written work from LKG onwards. Instead, children are encouraged to read a passage, understand it, and respond to thoughtful, curiosity-driven questions. If they are unsure, they can discuss it with their teachers the following day. In English, after reading, children are also encouraged to produce creative writing of their own choice based on the passage, ensuring true engagement and brainwork rather than rote copying.
